The Black Keys

I was honoured to be asked by John at BEYOND THE PALE to illustrate a poster for the Auckland Gig for The Black Keys. MY first ever gig poster, so you can imagine how stoked I was to do it for such a great band.
After bumping around half a dozen failed concepts, John and I both hit upon the idea of Pat and Dan as super heroes.
Above is my porgress sketches from tiny thumbnails, to finished pencil sketch, colour rough, and the final 4 colour screen print art.

John has some left, but they are going quick. BUY THEM HERE.

Black Rock Collective Card Deck 3.

Our 3rd deck (art directed my yours truly) from the Black Rock Collective. Here's the blurb that will accompany then HERE at our online store:

I hear you asking, "What is this I see before me? Playing cards, or 54 little pieces of art?"

I know, I know..this is the same opening line as the first two (and award winning) BRC card decks. But this deck is completely different to it's first two predecessors.

The Black Rock Collective hurried to get this deck out as the end of the world was, according to it's sources, the year 2012, right??

This beautiful deck, with artworks of mass destruction lovingly created by 30 artists of the BRC, pays homage to all those various myths, legends and conspiracy theories about how our little blue planet might meet its demise. Each artists, some more than once, has interpreted the end of the world differently. There's horsemen, meteors, floods, pandemics, and more than one skull in this deck.

As always, the styles are as varied as the BRC's nationalities. What IS different about this deck (masterfully named 'Version 3') is that every BRC artists started with a completely black background, with the black suits reversed out in white.

We hope you enjoy our 3rd deck, and if you don't have the first two decks, go buy them NOW and make your set complete.

Watermark advertisment...

Something different this time. This was for a full page advertisement I did for Watermark. As one of 24 artists I was honoured to be asked to this. The concept was inspired by a recent Mambo piece i did, which was loosely based on old Richard Scarry illustrations I remember as a child. Did'nt we all grow up on Little Golden Books?? :)

95% pencil sketch, 5% photoshop modified. Hope you like it.

Here's some close ups on my latest sub at Threadless. A collaboration with the very talented Joe Van Wetering. Not alot to tell really, just inspired by black light artwork. Long story of how I came to this imagery actaully..go to the Threadless link to see! :)

HERE'S my entry in the Threadless charity comp for the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation. The brief ask for a design that visualised 'overcoming obstacles'. I took a side ways approach to this and designed a shirt that would make families effected by this disease a 'member of a gang' for lack of a better word. Some to visually convey the strength and unity of a courageous bunch of folks joined together by something ultimately so horrible.
Above are my final submissions on a red shirt, with a couple of black shirt variants I toyed with early on.

This friday, I am honoured to be featured in a small collection of Threadless artists being exhibited by T-World magazine. Check out all the event info above, and HERE.

I recently gave this print to a couple of my good friends as a wedding gift, and they took this awesome pic of it for me. Looks great framed, and coordinates well with their red accented lounge.

A very quick pencil sketch (with some photshope tinkering) piece for the Design By Humans THE DARK KNIGHT RISES comp. To be judged by director Christopher Nolan himself!
I wish I had more time to work on this, as I feel I rushed it. 2 colours, warm black and white on grey. Wish me luck.

More Threadless competition work. This time for their Whole Planet Foundation Comp. Basically, Whole Foods sponsors 'micro loans' to individuals in poor or developing countries. They need a shirt to reprents the investment they make. I tried to represent 4 things, heart, growth, earth and family.

Another Threadless submission. I don't do enough girl, or even kids, friendly imagery, so I had this idea over the weekend. Hopefully it wins and I can get one for my nieces...

Here's another work in progress, for another Threadless comp, the theme being WEIRD. Not this image doesn't look particularly weird (was based lossely on a young William Burroughs, ended up more like a young Sinatra!) but I am adding some other elements. Stay tuned.

MAMBO (live painted in 2 hours) SURFBOARD.

Last Thursday those mad idiots at MAMBO threw a great 'Summer Wine Down' party at Manly Wine. Above is the end result. Catch the beautiful and lovely Erin McNaught at the party HERE. There's even a small glimpse of this board (and my receding hairline) before I finished it and got drunk with the rest of the Mambo staff!
